Skol! Pull tabs? Meat raffles? Testicle Festival?

If you’re from the north, these are nothing new to you. Well maybe the Testicle Festival. Still scratching my … head about that one. For the un-initiated, they have a whole different language in Minnesota.

Skol is a Viking battle cry. Not quite sure when or how it is uttered in modern day life.

Pull tabs are like lottery tickets but apparently have an 80% win rate The store posts these posters so you can see which of The prizes have already been won (they mark them out on the poster).

Meat raffles? WTAF. Apparently people gather at a bar, buy a ticket, and as the evening progresses, literal bundles of meat are awarded to winners. If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t believe it.


The next one is not something I cared to research. I mean, really Minnesota? This the best you can do with regards to naming things?

Finally, “pop” is a Diet Coke. Weird.

In other updates, as we left Madeline Island Sunday, we traveled part of the “Fruit Loop” in Bayfield WI. The loop is a bunch of fruit farms in the hills above Lake Superior that are well suited for fruit crops in the summer. I picked about a pound of raspberries for $4.50. Last time I picked raspberries was at Larry Land in Maryland with my folks, circa 1995.

Yesterday we made it to Madeline Island, Wisconsin - part of the Apostle Islands. Never heard of it? Neither had I (and I truthfully don't remember how I chose this as a stop on our trip).  Madeline Island (and it's bustling town of LaPointe) are accessed via a ferry from Bayfield, Wisconsin. We drove about 6 hours yesterday from our previous stop in the UP to reach Bayfield. On the way we stopped in a Michigan state park to see Lake of the Clouds. Gorgeous and totally worth it! I don't venture too close to the edge so had to peek around a corner to take this pic. SO windy up there - better shot of the Lake of the Clouds behind us in this obligatory selfie. Time moves slowly

Why is it that when we want time to fly by it doesn't?  And when we want it to crawl, so we can savor every moment, it moves at the speed of lightning?  So, the question is at what pace does it move when you want both those things at the same time? I'm tired today...  There's a lot on my mind at night these days and when the house is quiet and everyone is sleeping peacefully, its a good time to think.  Or play scrabble on the ipad.  Doesn't make for a very well-rested Judy in the morning though. Today's picture is Kendall running a half marathon this fall.  I love this picture because both of his feet are off the ground at the same time.  He is literally suspended in the air and I caught it with my camera!  He kicked butt in that race, but then I think he kicks butt in every race.  Merely finished 13.1 miles is kicking butt to me.  Doing it as fast as Kendall does is something I can't even process.  For him, running is therape...

I hate cancer

Sitting in the waiting room at Vanderbilt, the "belly of the beast" as I think of it. Just a routine (hopefully) three month check up for me. But even being here makes me nauseous. Looking at all the people waiting to see their doctors and get their labs checked brings back so many memories. Some have physical components like feeling sick or my hands sweating. It's just awful. Monday is the worst day here when everyone comes to see their doctors and start their chemo which they call "infusions" like that makes it better?  I'm glad I'm not here on a Monday & I make it a point never to schedule Monday appointments. Thursday is a slow day & there is still a line to check in. At Vanderbilt the chemo room, or "Infusion suite" as it's called, is on the second floor. So is the cafeteria which has a panda express. Still can't eat that food or go on the second floor here. I can't avoid the main clinic for check ups tho. Without fai...
